FAQ - D-Ticket

Since January 1, 2025, the Deutschland-Ticket costs 58 euros per month. Until the end of 2024, the price was 49 euros.

Please note that a Deutschlandticket is always valid for one calendar month (January, February…). For example if you buy a ticket on the 15th of a month, it will be valid until the end of that same month. Unlike other types of monthly passes, it will not be valid until the 15th of the following month.

You always have to pay the same amount no matter when you buy the ticket, e.g. someone who buys the ticket on the 1st of the month has to pay €58. Someone who buys the ticket on the 15th of the month will be charged the same amount, even though they have less time to use it.

Attention: The Deutschlandticket is only available on a subscription basis. If you do not cancel your subscription by the 10th of a month the contract will be automatically renewed for the following month.

Payment is automatically debited from your bank account at the beginning of each month.

Please note!

The Deutschland-Ticket is personal. Only you can use it.

Children under the age of 6 do not need their own ticket and travel free of charge.

Bicycles and dogs cannot be carried on this ticket.

If you want to take a bicycle with you, you will need to buy an extra ticket, a "Fahrradtageskarte” (Bicycle day ticket). And it must be stored in the spaces reserved in the carriages by the regional railway companies.

The Deutschland-Ticket can be used on regional trains and buses (SPNV) and on local public transport (ÖPNV) throughout Germany.

This means that a ticket bought in Freiburg can also be used on the Berlin underground, on the ferries in Hamburg or on a regional train in Munich.

The Deutschlandticket is only valid for journeys in second class.

Attention!

The €58 monthly ticket is not valid on long-distance trains such as the ICE (Intercity Express). It is also not valid on IC (Intercity) and EC (Eurocity) trains.

If you use the Deutschlandticket to travel from Frankfurt am Main to Dresden, for example, you will have to be patient. You will need time and several changes.

The Deutschland-Ticket can be purchased on the Deutsche Bahn website. It is also available from the DB Navigator application and from regional and local transport companies.

You can cancel your Deutschland-Ticket by the 10th of the previous month at the latest. After this date, the subscription will be automatically renewed.

For example, if you do not want to renew your Deutschlandticket for December, cancel it before 10 November.

If you buy the ticket after the 10th of the month, the contract is automatically extended for the following month, as the cancellation period for that month has already expired. You will therefore be charged for two calendar months, even if you no longer need the ticket for the second month.

There are two ways to cancel your subscription if you bought your ticket from Deutsche Bahn:

Please note

You must indicate the subscription number and not the order number. Otherwise, Deutsche Bahn will not consider your cancellation request.

No.

The Deutschland-Ticket is not valid for a cross-border journeys.

But there are exceptions. For example, some community stations close to the border can be reached.

For example, the Deutschlandticket can be used from Lauterbourg and Wissembourg in France to Germany and back.

You can also use the D-Ticket to travel to Salzburg and Kufstein in Austria and Schaffhausen in Switzerland.

In the summer of 2022, Germany introduced a low-cost rail pass: the €9 ticket. The aim was to help Germans cope with rising fuel, energy and food prices. The initiative was introduced for a short period: 3 months.

Between 1 June and 31 August 2022, 52 million tickets were sold. And 1 in 5 were new customers who had never used public transport before.

The use of local and regional transport has benefited both the German public purse and the climate. That's why, at the end of the summer, the question arose as to whether a permanent season ticket should be introduced.

After months of discussion, the federal government, the federal states and the transport companies came to an agreement. They created the Deutschland-Ticket.

This affordable season ticket came into force on 1 May 2023.
